Living Healthfully - April 2009

The Practice of Medicine

April 28th 2009 12:02
The practice of medicine, and the Hippocratic Oath of doing good and avoiding infliction of harm, have co-existed since time memorial. They have witnessed and have been witnessing how times change. They have sub served kingdoms, and governments, and societies- both ancient and modern. They have been of service to mankind and have been continuously reviewed, modified, and explored for betterment and progress.

However, despite of changes in the era, and the thriving and ever-advancing knowledge of man, a common denominator among the practice and the oath should remain. And that is to inculcate among healthcare providers the clean and conscientious intentions of elaborating their craft. This is very important especially at present, that people are more aggressive, doing almost anything (researches) for the sake of science; liberated and less mindful of others. A healthcare provider should divert from these current systems. People rely upon us for wellness and cure for their sickness. Let this not be abused, that no matter how good we are, how huge the technology we possess, how important our researches are, we should not compromise our patients’ rights. We should not deprive them of knowledge they need for better decisions regarding their health. And we, ourselves, should be protectors of the society. We, being servants of health, should not measure our practice as to how much compensation we get (like when convincing a patient to undergo surgery when it is not really needed, for the sake of earning more). Respect for others and equal treatment among rich and poor people are things we must never forget. And despite of the modern ways of detecting ailments through laboratory screenings and machine scans, we should remember that what we treat is not the laboratory or image result, but a person, who like us needs someone to talk to, whom he can ventilate his or her emotions.
