Nutrition for Metabolic Syndrome Part 3

December 29th 2010 05:31
Previously we've discussed the ill effects of Metabolic Syndrome. And today we shall summarize the diet recommended by experts.

Especially this season of sharing, gift-giving, and party-ing one should watch out for the food he or she is eating.

For those with central/abdominal obesity it is necessary to reduce caloric intake. Saturated fats and cholesterol (sources include pork, beef, and the likes) should be trimmed down. Sweets has to be trimmed down as well.

If a person is hypertensive it is advised to reduce salt intake.

Persons with elevated triglyceride levels should consider taking in more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Unsaturated fats (preferably monounsaturated fats) can be included in the diet with moderation. Sources include almonds, olive oil, sesame seeds, fish, and others. Fats from fish are especially important since they reduce tendency for blood clots and blood vessel inflammation.

December 2nd 2010 10:00
Here are some of the troubles associated to Metabolic Syndrome:

1. endothelial or blood vessel damage: this leads to poor tissue oxygenation and can result to stroke, heart attack, peripheral vascular disease, and others;

2. Premature Aging: In Metabolic Syndrome free radicals are generated. Free radicals are said to be precursors of premature aging;

3. Osteoporosis;

4. reduced sexual function;

5. Even Hypothyroidism can ensue.

Metabolic syndrome is managed both medically and nutritionally. The nutritional goals include the following (Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition, Far Eastern University-NRMF):

a. trimming down carbohydrates to increase insulin sensitivity;
b. reducing LDL cholesterol
c. increasing HDL cholesterol
d. controlling sodium intake

to be continued...
