Dietary Recommendations Regarding FATS INTAKE
January 3rd 2012 13:08
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! I never really wanted to spoil your eating and party-ing...well here I am just the same for reminders...We don't want to get ourselves in trouble as 2011 arrives. Believe you me! This season is not only a season of happiness and eating spree. This is also a season of heart attacks and strokes...Am I being negative? Hehe...Pardon me... But please be careful with what you eat this time of the year!
Ideally our daily fat intake should be less than 30% of our total diet. Only less than 1/3 should come from saturated fats. Experts recommend more of intake of unsaturated fats (but in moderation of course). OH! Watch out for trans fats of course!
Why am I warning you about saturated fats? Intake of lots of these increases our blood cholesterol and LDL (bad cholesterol carriers), while decreasing our HDL (good cholesterol carriers). Implication: more risk for heart attack!!! Sources of saturated fats are animal products such as meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy products, lard, and butter.
While saturated fats produce the above result, unsaturated fats lead to the opposte. These fats decrease LDL and cholesterol, while increasing HDL. Best sources are fatty cold-water fish (salmon, mackerel, and herring), flaxseeds, flax oil, and walnut.
Up next...what are TRANS FATS?!!!!!!!
